A St Andrew’s Tradition

Welcome to this year’s Icons Challenge, a long-standing St Andrew’s tradition that has been part of our Melbourne Connections experience for as long as the program has existed.

Every year our students set out across the city, exploring the landmarks and hidden corners that make Melbourne the vibrant, creative and multicultural place that it is.

Not Your Typical Scavenger Hunt

Strategy Over Speed

This isn't a race against the clock — everyone has the same amount of time. It's about strategy, creativity, and working out how to navigate through the list as best you can.

Points & Creativity

Different challenges are worth different amounts of points. Be bold and original — creative and unique submissions will attract bonus points. It's not just what you do, but how you do it.

Categories & Rules

1. Icon Challenges

Find specific locations around the city. These are the core landmarks you need to discover.

2. Creative Bonus

Complete and provide evidence of a creative challenge. These require imagination and will earn you extra points.

Important Timing Rules

15 Icons Challenges and 11 Creative Challenges will be released on the MS Teams channel on Wednesday at 1:00 PM Sharp.

  • Start: State Library on Wednesday at 1:00 PM sharp.
  • Duration: All groups must be out completing the challenge until 4:15 PM.
  • Early Return: Points will be deducted.
  • Late Return: Points will be deducted.

How It Works

01

Get Ready

Shortly before the challenge begins, your group will receive the full list of icons and creative prompts.

02

Game Time

From that moment on, it’s game time. As you complete each challenge, your group will upload your photo or video to our online submission portal.

03

Submission

Your submission must show as many of the group as you can — and it must match the challenge you’re claiming the points for.

04

The Prize

Staff will review the submissions, tally the points overnight, and announce the winning group the following morning. Yes — the prize is real.

Forming Your Group

In the days leading up to the event, you’ll need to form a group of four to seven students. Groups can be made up of anyone in our Melbourne Connections cohort — across classes and across friend groups.

This is a chance to work with people you may not normally team up with, so please make sure everyone is included and no one is left out.

Groups need to be locked in and sorted by the end of Tuesday. You will then be added to a new MS Teams Group for the challenge day including all the teachers and your team mates.

A Challenge with Purpose

The Icons Challenge is ultimately about much more than points. It’s about navigating a big city with confidence, communicating as a team, making quick decisions, exploring respectfully, noticing the culture around you, and having a whole lot of fun while doing it.

Melbourne is a city full of energy, history and creativity — and this challenge is designed to help you see that for yourselves.
